German-born Christine Matthäi’s fascination with photography and film began during her early teenage years. She studied and graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Berlin.

She moved to New York City in the mid eighties where she started as a photographer’s assistant. Later she worked as a photojournalist and foreign correspondent for international magazines and newspapers. At the same time, she continued her education taking courses at the Parson’s School of Design and New York Film Academy.

Her strong connections to the New York art scene for many years stimulated and helped contribute to the exploration of her own artistic creativity. Over a decade ago, she decided to follow her calling and pursue her art photography full time.

During her extended travels to different places far and wide, she captured her surroundings, which resulted in creating collections of distinct photographic series. Her favored subject on her journeys has always been the water in ponds, lakes and oceans.

This great fascination resulted in her water reflection series and photographic images being produced into DVDs with relaxing music.

Today, Christine continues to draw her inspiration from nature. Her Light and Sea series is inspired by the extraordinary light conditions of sea, sky and water on the East End of Long Island, New York, where she’s been a resident of Shelter Island since 1992.

Images in Light and Sea also pay tribute to the raw natural beauty of the Hamptons and the Bahamas, which has been her winter home for many years.
