Magritte might say, “This is not a boat," I would add, nor is it necessarily a representation of a boat. My principal interest in photography is in walking the subtle line between a subject and the purely visual experience in the act of seeing that subject.

The Boatyard Project was developed in three stages, beginning with what I call digital studies. Use of a digital camera enabled a more intuitive exploration of the project’s visual constructs. With the insights gained, I returned to the boatyard to make my final impressions on film. If step one was about discovery, this step was a meditation. The final step, printing, is as important to me as the previous two. Each selected image has been rendered with the highest possible fidelity, yielding a print that is as much an object of art in its own right, as a homage to the unsuspected beauty of the original subjects.
